What to Pack for a Trip Up North (Every Season)

Packing for a Trip Up North

Northern Michigan weather can shift fast, and packing right makes the difference between chasing comfort all week and actually enjoying your trip. Here’s what our family packs, season by season, for a stay at one of our properties.

Summer (June–August)

Days run warm and evenings cool off quickly, especially near the water. Pack swimwear, quick-dry clothing, and a light jacket or flannel for nights around the fire pit. Bug spray is worth the suitcase space, and a good pair of water shoes will save your feet on rocky lake bottoms and docks.

Fall (September–October)

Layers are everything this time of year. Mornings can be crisp while afternoons warm up nicely, so pack a base layer, a warmer mid-layer, and a waterproof shell for the occasional rain. Comfortable walking shoes matter too — you’ll want to be on your feet exploring color-covered trails and small-town main streets.

Winter (November–March)

This is serious cold-weather territory. Insulated boots, wool socks, a heavy coat, and warm layers underneath are non-negotiable if you’re planning to ski, snowmobile, or spend any real time outdoors. If your stay includes a hot tub, don’t forget a robe or towel to make the walk back inside a little more bearable.

Spring (April–May)

Spring Up North can swing from sunny to sleet in the same afternoon. Waterproof layers and sturdy shoes go a long way, and it’s worth packing for both a 40-degree morning and a 65-degree afternoon.

What You Won’t Need to Pack

Every MiNorthStays home comes with a fully equipped kitchen, high-speed WiFi, and a washer and dryer, so you can pack lighter and do laundry mid-trip instead of hauling a week’s worth of clothes. Browse our properties and start planning what to bring for your season Up North.
