If you’re trying to work out where to take the family next summer, Lake Charlevoix deserves a serious look. It’s Michigan’s third-largest inland lake, with roughly 17,200 acres of water and 56 miles of shoreline, and it sits between the towns of Charlevoix, East Jordan and Boyne City. For a family that wants swimming, boating and a slower pace without giving up restaurants, ice cream and a proper Main Street, Boyne City is the sweet spot on that lake.
We co-host this Lake Charlevoix lake house on the quiet north shore, about five minutes from downtown Boyne City, and this guide covers everything we’d want to know before booking a family trip here ourselves.
Why Lake Charlevoix Is Northern Michigan’s Best-Kept Family Secret
A big, clean lake built for swimming and boating
Lake Charlevoix’s main basin reaches around 122 feet at its deepest point, but the shallower bays and shoreline stay comfortable for swimming through the summer. The lake is fed by the Boyne and Jordan Rivers and connects out to Lake Michigan through the Pine River Channel at Charlevoix, so if you want to explore further afield by boat, that’s entirely possible from a dock on Lake Charlevoix.
Close enough to town, quiet enough to actually relax
The north shore, where our property sits, avoids the busiest boat traffic near downtown while staying a short drive from everything Boyne City offers. That’s the balance most families with young kids are actually after: a proper beach-and-dock afternoon, then dinner downtown twenty minutes later without a long drive back in the dark.
Our Boyne City Lake House: What Families Get
Space to spread out — three bedrooms, three bathrooms, sleeps eight
This is a genuine multi-family or multigenerational house — three bedrooms and three full bathrooms mean you’re not queuing for a shower before a boat trip, and sleeping up to ten guests means grandparents, cousins or a second family can join without anyone camping on the sofa.
A shared dock and private fire pit, right on the water
The dock is the feature that changes the whole trip. Kids can swim off it, you can tie up a rented pontoon or fishing boat for the week, and evenings end at the fire pit with the lake right in front of you rather than a shared or public beach.
Family Activities On and Around the Lake
On the water: swimming, paddling and boat rentals
Local outfitters in Boyne City rent pontoons, tritoons, ski boats, jet skis, paddleboards and kayaks by the day, so you don’t need to own a boat to spend the week on the water. Lake Charlevoix also has six public boat launches around its shoreline if you’re bringing your own.
In downtown Boyne City: Stroll the Streets, the farmers’ market and more
Every Friday evening through the summer, downtown Boyne City closes in for “Stroll the Streets” — live music on every corner and activities like face painting for younger kids. The Boyne City Farmers’ Market runs Wednesdays and Saturdays from mid-May to mid-September (and Saturdays year-round), and it’s an easy, low-effort family morning out.
Rainy-day options: Avalanche Bay, Raven Hill Discovery Center, Lavender Hill Farm
If the weather turns, Boyne Mountain’s Avalanche Bay is one of Michigan’s largest indoor water parks, and SkyBridge Michigan — the world’s longest timber-towered suspension bridge — is a short drive away too. For something calmer, Raven Hill Discovery Center has hands-on science and nature exhibits for curious kids, and Lavender Hill Farm is a genuinely lovely, low-key stop with lavender ice cream and a working farm to wander.
When to Visit (and What’s On)
Peak season (May–September)
Water temperatures are comfortable for swimming from roughly May through August; outside that window, the lake is best enjoyed from the dock rather than in it. Book early for July and August — this is peak family-travel season across all of Northern Michigan.
Festivals worth planning your trip around
The National Morel Mushroom Festival lands in May, and Boyne Thunder — a powerboat poker-run event — takes over the lake every July. Both give a trip a bit of extra local flavour beyond “just” a lake week.
Why Book Direct with MiNorthStays
What “book direct” actually saves you
Most vacation rental platforms build a service fee into what you pay to book — it’s part of why the same property can look like a different price depending on where you find it. Booking directly with us through minorthstays.com means you’re paying us, not a platform’s fee structure, and you get a direct line to a real local host — us — before, during and after your stay, instead of routing every question through an app.
